FRANKLIN, Ind. -- An officer with the Franklin Police Department and his wife were arrested and preliminarily charged with domestic battery Sunday evening.

An officer with Johnson County Sheriff's Office responded to the 1000 block of Spring Meadow Court over a family dispute.

When he arrived, he met Jordan Burton, who claimed her husband, Bryan Burton, grabbed her by the arm.

She told police after Bryan grabbed her, she tried to leave, but he followed and started removing the battery from the vehicle she was trying to get in.

The responding officer noticed a "significant red mark" on her arm where she said he grabbed her.

The officer talked to Bryan, who said Jordan punched him in the face, leaving a red mark on his temple.

Both Jordan and Bryan were placed under arrest and taken to the Johnson County Jail.

Franklin Police Chief, Tim O'Sullivan, released a statement regarding Burton's arrest:

The City of Franklin was very disappointed to learn last evening of the arrest of one of our officers, Bryan Burton. City police were dispatched to a resident in response to a domestic disturbance and discovered the involvement of our officer. To avoid the appearance of conflict or impropriety, we contacted the Johnson County Sheriff's Office who conducted the investigation resulting in the officers' arrest. The city has placed Bryan Burton on unpaid leave pending a merit commission hearing for final action.
