GREENSBURG, Ind. -- Greensburg police say a man walked into their lobby Tuesday and confessed to killing his girlfriend.

Jason Eaton, 43, was formally charged Thursday with murder in connection to the death of his girlfriend, Wendy Sabatini.

According to a probable cause affidavit, Eaton told police he attempted to propose to Sabatini Tuesday evening – but she declined before he was even able to ask.

Eaton said he then grabbed a firearm and moved behind Sabatini, who was sitting on the bed. He said the gun went off – striking Sabatini in the head and killing her.

Eaton reportedly then left the home and went to an acquaintance's house, where he told her that he "messed up" and thought he and killed Sabatini.

Eaton was booked into the Decatur County Jail on Tuesday and was being held without bail.
