GREENFIELD, Ind. -- A 20-year-old woman was charged with neglect after her daughter was found in the middle of an intersection in Greenfield, Indiana.

An officer with the Greenfield Police Department said a woman driving southbound on Pratt Street saw a 1-year-old girl walking in the road, according to a probable cause document. The woman stopped and called the child over, then called the police.

Police found a house nearby with the door open and met a woman sleeping inside, according to the court document. The woman, Alyssa Anderson, said the girl, A.R.M., was her daughter, but Anderson's mother is her legal guardian.

Anderson's mother told police she has been the girl's guardian for two years, and Anderson is only allowed to have supervised visits with A.R.M.

Anderson's mother said her usual babysitter was sick and she couldn't find anybody else to watch A.R.M.

Anderson told police she fell asleep when A.R.M. was asleep and when she woke up, the police were there. Anderson's mother said the girl has been able to unlock and open doors recently.

Anderson was charged due to the following, from the court document:

I am requesting a warrant for the arrest of Alyssa Anderson for neglect of a dependent. Even though Alyssa knew she was not supposed to visit with A.R.M. unless supervised, she was still responsible for the safety of A.R.M. and failed to ensure her safety by keeping her inside the home.

It is unknown if Anderson's mother was charged with a crime.
