Handcuffed suspect steals police cruiser, damages multiple vehicles on Indy's east side

INDIANAPOLIS -- A man being arrested on an outstanding warrant was able to slip his cuffs, steal a marked cruiser and lead police on a brief chase. 

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were serving a warrant on Dexter Moss, 28, at a home on N Denny Street just before 2 p.m. Saturday. The warrant was for robbery, criminal recklessness with a firearm and possession of a gun without a permit. 

Moss had been taken into custody and was handcuffed in the back seat of the cruiser. All but one officer had gone back into the home to complete the investigation when Moss slipped his handcuffs and jumped into the driver's seat of the cruiser.

He led police on a pursuit through alleys and surface streets before crashing head-on into another vehicle near the intersection of 16th Street and Euclid Avenue. 

Moss then put the cruiser in reverse and backed into another cruiser. 

During the pursuit, one other officer crashed into a parked vehicle near the intersection of 10th Street and Lasalle Road. 

Dexter was taken into custody at the scene.He's now facing multiple additional charges including fleeing law enforcement, escape and auto theft.   

No injuries were reported. Three cruisers  and two private vehicles were damaged during the pursuit.
