INDIANAPOLIS -- A suspect fleeing police in a stolen car crashed into an unsuspecting driver Thursday night, leaving both seriously injured in trapped in their vehicles.

The chase began shortly after 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the 300 block of South Temple Avenue.

IMPD officers were dispatched on reports of a stolen vehicle. They located that vehicle, a 2009 Chevy Impala, a short time after arriving on scene – at which point the driver fled, leading police on a high-speed chase.

"Officers tried to stop the vehicle and a pursuit then ensued," Officer Jim Gillespie said. "As they were crossing the intersection at Washington Street, against the signal, the suspect ended up striking an innocent bystander's vehicle that was headed westbound on Washington Street."

The collision flipped the suspect's vehicle and left both drivers trapped inside. Indianapolis firefighters had to be called to the scene to extricate the suspect and victim with the Jaws of Life.

The suspect, 23-year-old Dominique J. Carter, was transported to the hospital in serious condition.

The victim was initially transported to the hospital in critical condition, but was later upgraded to serious condition.

Carter faces preliminary charges of auto theft, resisting law enforcement and driving while suspended resulting in injury.

Marion County court records show Carter already has several charges pending against him in other cases, including charges of strangulation and domestic battery stemming from an incident in late February.

He was charged in October with driving while suspended and driving without ever having received a license.

Bond was set for Wednesday's pursuit at $7,500.
