INDIANAPOLIS -- The Indiana Department of Correction plans to close its minimum security facility on Indy's Near Eastside before the end of July.

The Indianapolis Re-Entry Educational Facility (IREF) currently holds 183 inmates at its location at the corner of New York and Randolph streets. The 420-bed facility was formerly the Indiana Women's Prison.

The facility has been operating continuously as a correctional facility since 1873.

The IDOC announced Wednesday it plans to close the facility before Aug. 1 and move current inmates to the Heritage Trails, Edinburgh or Pendleton correctional facilities. IREF employees will be offered jobs at other IDOC facilities.

A new use for the facility hasn't yet been determined. The IDOC plans to maintain the facility until a new tenant is found.
