INDIANAPOLIS – More than a dozen vehicles in Indianapolis were stolen this month while drivers allowed them to warm up unattended, according to IMPD.

Deloris Perkins and her son know the situation all too well.

Perkin’s son started his car Thursday morning and made a quick trip inside to brush his teeth. During his trip back inside, his car was stolen.

“I didn't know what to think...and then I thought oh boy what are we going to do,” said Perkins. “I have to depend on getting to the hospital for a checkup on my heart, getting groceries, down to the bank, every place that we have to go.”

Police said bottom line – just don’t do it.

If drivers choose to ignore that advice, police recommend getting a remote control automatic starter or a steering-wheel lock.

Perkins said she has tried to stop her son from leaving his car running before.

“I warned him,” she said.

The two plan to get a rental car until they can purchase another vehicle in the future.
