MADISON COUNTY, Ind. – Two adults were taken into custody after their 2-month-old daughter was found to have more than one dozen bone fractures.

The Madison County Sheriff said 22-year-old Ryan Smith and 19-year-old Emily McCune were arrested Sunday.

Investigators said Smith is responsible for the infant’s injuries, which he allegedly caused when the baby wouldn’t stop crying.

"There should be nothing an infant does that is so terrible that yous should put your hands on them. Unbelievable," said Matt Rutledge, who lives in the area.

The infant was taken to Riley Children’s Hospital where she is being treated.

Both adults face charges of neglect of a dependent resulting in serious injury and are being held at the Madison County Jail.

"She didn't do anything about it. She didn't stop it," said Madison County Prosecutor Rodney Cummings. "She didn't seek treatment when it was happening or immediately after. She didn't call police. She didn't do anything to help her child. That seems to be contrary to the natural instincts of a mother to me."
