SPEEDWAY, Ind. -- A mail carrier is being credited with helping people in a Speedway neighborhood after firefighters say he spotted a fire while delivering the mail and called for help.
The mail carrier was working his route near the 5800 block of West 25th Street in Speedway on Wednesday when he saw smoke coming from the building.
Firefighters say he went door-to-door to make sure no one was inside the apartment after reporting it.
Investigators say his quick actions helped them to put out the fire before it was able to spread to other apartments.
"I'm happy I could do it," said Mail carrier Nurudeen Akinpelu, "I was at the right place at the right time."
No one was hurt in the fire, but firefighters say one apartment was heavily damaged by the flames.
Three other apartments had smoke damage.
