INDIANAPOLIS – A man was listed in serious condition after he was shot at Tarkington Park on the city's north side Tuesday evening.

Aaron Hamer with Indianapolis police said 27-year-old John Willis was shot twice in the back, but when they arrived on scene he was awake and talking.

He was taken to IU Methodist Hospital and officers began speaking with witnesses on scene to gather more information.

Tarkington Park recently underwent  a $6 million renovation to attract more children and families. The park includes a splash pad, playground and basketball courts.

Neighbors in the area said they are aware of the shooting but have not panicked.

"The violence just is, what it is. It could happen anywhere. The park is beautiful. It's for the kids. It's not going to stop us from coming here," said Keonna Scott, who brings her children to the park often.

Scott's friend, Tara Vander, called the situation "unfortunate."

"It's a fun place to get together with our friends. It's unfortunate that it happened. I think I'm pretty mindful of my surroundings and where I am, so I think I'll keep coming," she said.

Community leaders like Rev. Charles Harrison from the Ten Point Coalition said the park safety issue will be immediately addressed.

"We have gone 603 days without a homicide," said Harrison. "We are going to be able to handle this as a neighborhood and as a community. To make sure that kids are safe."

Josh Barker with Indianapolis police said officers have spoken to several witnesses and north district officers will maintain a presence at the park.
