INDIANAPOLIS – Neighbors in a northeast side community are concerned for their safety after dozens of cars have been seen ignoring stop signs.

Ernie Shearer said he is frustrated by the way drivers ignore the traffic signs in Cherry Lake subdivision, so he decided to record the area to show law enforcement officers proof.

Within a 17-minute span, 22 of 44 cars passed through an intersection without stopping.

“From 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. this neighborhood has kids in the street riding their bicycles, playing ball, running across the street to each other’s homes. It's gotten so bad we can't let our grandkids play out here in front. It is extremely dangerous," said Shearer.

Shearer said he isn’t the only person upset. Other neighbors say they feel the same way.

“I have a daughter and a niece,” said Jameel Steward, who lives in the neighborhood. “They come out and play. It could be an accident. It would be the driver at fault because they are not paying attention to what is going on around them."

Shearer contacted police several times and motorcycle officers were sent to monitor the intersection.

He also connected with Susie Cordi, a member of the City-County Council to help.

"I plan on talking to traffic today to see if they could get some motorcycles police out here to take care of this. They have been out here in the past but not enough to satisfy Ernie."

Although officers won’t be able to monitor the intersection 24/7, police said they hope the threat will change driver’s behaviors.
