INDIANAPOLIS -- A man who was shot Thursday evening on Indianapolis' north side has died from his injuries.

The shooting happened in the 200 block of W. 38th Street just before 6 p.m. at a Shell gas station.

A spokesperson for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department said the man in his 20s was taken to the hospital in critical condition after he was found lying on the ground by a gas pump.

Two guns were found at the scene. The suspected shooter cooperated with police and claimed he defended himself. He was released after the police investigation and a consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor's Office.

The man who died has not been identified.

Many of those from the area said loitering at the gas station is the cause of the crime.

"If that liquor store was not there - I guarantee that this neighborhood would be cleaned up," said one person who didn't wish to go on camera.

IMPD said they are aware of the loitering issue and have patrols in the area.
