WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ind. -- The three people found dead in a home in Washington County earlier this week were identified by the Monroe County Coroner's Office.

The three victims were identified as Danny Newlin, Kelley Kay Newlin and Austin Newlin, who were said to be father, mother and son. Autopsies revealed the victims died as a result of gunshot wounds.

The investigation began on Sunday afternoon, when the Washington County sheriff's department performed a welfare check at a house in the 5800 block of S. Beck's Mill Road in a rural part of the county.

A deputy knocked on the door and noticed a dead person inside.

Police searched the house and found two more bodies.

The suspect, 47-year-old Richard Lee Burton, was found dead inside his car Monday morning.

Burton's vehicle was found shortly after at the Blackwell Horse Camp in Monroe County, Indiana near State Road 446.

Burton lived at the house where the bodies were found, according to Indiana State Police, but as a guest, not a homeowner.

Police believed he was headed to Tennessee, Missouri or Texas before he was found.

ISP says eight homicides have happened in Washington County in 2017.
