JASPER COUNTY, Ind. -- An Illinois woman was struck and killed by a semi-truck Monday after stepping out of her vehicle on I-65 in Jasper County, and Indiana State Police believe the truck was headed toward Indianapolis.

The collision occurred around 10:45 a.m., when Nika L. Trippi, 30, of Lombard, Illinois, apparently pulled her 2014 Chevy Suburban over on the outer shoulder of the road and stepped out to check on a noise coming from her vehicle.

As Trippi closed her door, police say she was hit by a passing semi-truck.

Witnesses described the truck as a gray, older model Freightliner pulling a gray enclosed box trailer. Police said the semi never stopped and continued southbound on I-65.

Trippi was pronounced dead at the scene of massive blunt force trauma.

Police said her two children and her mother were inside the vehicle at the time of the collision. None of them were injured.

Anyone with information about the crash or the identity of the semi-truck driver is asked to contact Indiana State Police at 219-696-6242.
