NEW CASTLE, Ind. -- Police asked a New Castle man suspected of driving under the influence for his driver's license – only to be handed an old jail inmate ID card, instead.

Around 9:30 p.m. Sunday, an Indiana state trooper was traveling through New Castle on 18th Street when he witnessed a car driving left of center, nearly striking another vehicle.

The trooper pulled the car over, at which point he reportedly noticed the strong odor of alcohol.

When the trooper asked the driver, 30-year-old Renaldo Luna, of New Castle, for his driver's license, Luna was reportedly unable to find it. He did, however, hand the trooper his old Henry County Jail inmate ID card.

The trooper subsequently learned that Luna didn't have a driver's license because he was suspended. Luna was also reportedly found to have a BAC of more than .16 percent.

Luna was booked into the Henry County Jail on preliminary charges of operating a vehicle while intoxicated with a prior conviction and operating while intoxicated with a BAC over .15 percent.

A passenger in the vehicle, Marcos Luna, 48, of New Castle, was found to be wanted on two misdemeanor arrest warrants out of Henry County. He was also taken into custody.
