A Rushville mother and father have been arrested in connection with shaking their 4-week-old infant, causing critical injuries, police said.

The infant was taken to Rush Memorial Hospital on July 22 and then transferred to Indiana University Health Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis with severe head trauma.

Police later arrested the infant's father, Joshua Barber, 28, and the infant's mother, Julie M. Clines, 21, after their explanation of the incident was inconsistent with the injuries, police said.

Barber was arrested on preliminary charges of aggravated battery, battery resulting in serious bodily injury to a child, battery resulting in serious bodily injury and neglect of a dependent.

Clines was preliminarily charged with neglect of a dependent.

Barber and Clines were both being held at the Rush County Jail.
