LAWRENCE, Mass. - It's said that it's news when man bites dog. So, it should follow that dog shoots gun is a pretty big deal.

That's what happened in the town of Lawrence, Mass.

Police said a dog searching for a gun in a snow bank found the weapon, all right. The pooch ended up pulling the trigger with his its paw, firing the weapon.

The episode started early Sunday morning when an officer on patrol heard three gunshots.

When the officer went to investigate, he saw a vehicle speed away. When the car pulled over, police saw a man scamper out and bury something in the snow.

A police dog named Ivan was put on the case. As he dug furiously in the snow, he got his paws on the gun and it went off.

"The dog, in scratching, had somehow got to the trigger area," Lawrence Police Chief John Romero told WCVB-TV . "I've seen a lot of K-9s locate weapons. This is the first time I've seen a case of where the gun discharged."

The authorities ended up getting their paws on three men -- arresting them in the case. Turns out the gun in question had been stolen in New Hampshire back in October.
