MASON, Ohio - The Vortex at Kings Island reached a dizzying milestone on Saturday when it plunged and looped its way to its 40 millionth ride.
The Vortex opened April 11, 1987, and was the first coaster of its kind to send riders through six inversions, according to a release from Kings Island. The steel coaster has 3,800 feet of track and exceeds speeds of 55 miles-per-hour.
Even with its huge number of runs, the Vortex places sixth in the history of number of rides at Kings Island. The theme park opened in 1972, WCPO reported.
Beating the Vortex is the Racer with 98 million rides, the Kings Island and Miami Valley Railroad with 50 million rides, the Beast with 47 million rides, Woodstock Express with 43 million rides and Race for Your Life Charlie Brown with 43 million rides, according to Kings Island Public Relations Area Manager Don Helbig.
