Police: Man put pet hamster in oven, turned it on

Police say couple had been drinking

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - A man and his girlfriend were arrested over the weekend after he put the family's pet hamster in the oven and turned it on, police said.

David Bohnsack, 56, was fighting with his girlfriend when he put the animal in the oven, authorities said.

Kelly Shields, 53, chased Bohnsack with a cast-iron skillet, breaking a bone in his shoulder when she struck him with it, officials said.

Shields was able to get the animal from the oven and return it to a cage unharmed.

Bohnsack was arrested on a charge of cruelty to animals and criminal domestic violence. Shields was also charged with criminal domestic violence.

Police said the couple had been drinking, WCNC-TV reported .
