Who knew Big Bird would be the star of the first presidential debate?
Twitter, Facebook and other social media sites lit up Wednesday night after GOP candidate Mitt Romney pledged to cut funding for public broadcasting.
"I'm going to stop the subsidy to PBS. I'm going to stop other things," Romney said. "I like PBS, I like Big Bird, I actually like (Jim Lehrer) too."
Several Twitter feeds immediately popped up, including @BigBirdRomney, @BigBird,@FiredBigBird, and more, each gaining from hundreds to thousands of followers within minutes, Entertainment Weekly reported.
There's even a Big Bird for President Facebook page. #BigBird and his friend #OscartheGrouch both became Twitter trending topics during the course of the debate, while Romney’s quip also spawned several memes and .gifs.
