HAMPTON, Va. - Police often find they have to get creative to deter higher levels of crime around the holidays – but one Virginia department took creativity to the next level.
Officers from the Hampton Police Department decided to write and record a Christmas jingle warning criminals about the risks of running afoul of police … and their partner, Santa.
"It’s a serious issue we’re talking about. Right now, we have high visibility at our shopping centers to deter crime. This video is a way to let people to know that we want you to enjoy your experience and be safe," Cpl. Mary Shackelford told ABC13 WVEC.
Shackelford said the video was the idea of the department's social media officer. Since it was posted, the department has gotten a number of new followers, including out-of-state departments.
