HAMPTON, Va. - Police often find they have to get creative to deter higher levels of crime around the holidays – but one Virginia department took creativity to the next level.
Officers from the Hampton Police Department decided to write and record a Christmas jingle warning criminals about the risks of running afoul of police … and their partner, Santa.
"It’s a serious issue we’re talking about. Right now, we have high visibility at our shopping centers to deter crime. This video is a way to let people to know that we want you to enjoy your experience and be safe," Cpl. Mary Shackelford told ABC13 WVEC .
Shackelford said the video was the idea of the department's social media officer. Since it was posted, the department has gotten a number of new followers, including out-of-state departments.
