Deputy Prosecutor Accused Of Driving Drunk

Witnesses: Woman Swerved Off Road

A Madison County deputy prosecutor was drunk when she drove off the road and crashed into the side of a hill, police said.

Janine L. Sutton, 49, was arrested Wednesday in the area of 2726 S. Scatterfield Road in Anderson.

Witnesses told police that Sutton was at a stoplight with her vehicle straddling both lanes. When the light turned green, witnesses said, she accelerated and continued driving off the road and into a ditch before running into the hill.

Police said that when they arrived at the scene, Sutton had to steady herself on her car to stand and stumbled several times. She also smelled of alcohol, officers said.

Sutton told police she swerved off the road to avoid hitting a vehicle in front of her.

She failed a field sobriety test and registered a .13 blood-alcohol content at a short time later at the police station.

Sutton was arrested and preliminarily charged with operating a vehicle while intoxicated with impairment.
