The Marion County Coroner's Office confirmed Monday that a skull found in the White River on Indianapolis' west side Sunday is human.

John Hudman told RTV6 he was wading in the river to fish near Bluff Road underneath West Raymond Street when he found what appeared to be a human skull about 6 feet from the east bank.

He called police and homicide detectives responded to the scene.

The skull was turned over to the coroner's office.

Chief Deputy Coroner Alfarena Ballew said the office is working with police and members of the Indianapolis Fire Department dive team to search for additional remains in the area where the skull was found.

"The plan is to recover any remains, bring them into our office and examine them further using the expertise of a forensic anthropologist," Ballew said. "The forensic anthropologist will be able to determine as close as possible, age, race and possible gender of the remains."

The process could take several weeks.
