A Putnam County physician has pleaded guilty to charges that he excessively prescribed narcotics, with authorities saying he sometimes did so in exchange for sexual encounters with female patients.

State officials have already suspended the medical license for 57-year-old Ray Howell of Roachdale, but his plea agreement with prosecutors would prohibit him from practicing medicine again.

Putnam County Prosecutor Tim Bookwalter told the Banner Graphic that he plans during Howell's sentencing hearing to have some of his former patients testify about his reckless prescription writing and sexual advances.

Howell pleaded guilty Thursday to five charges, including unlawful distribution of oxycodone and other pain medications.

Sentencing has been set for 2 p.m. Aug. 13.
