Marian University is getting a multimillion dollar campus upgrade courtesy of an Indiana businessman.

A groundbreaking for Marian’s college of osteopathic medicine was held Wednesday.

The project was made possible by a $48 million donation from Mike Evans, the CEO of Indy-based AIT Laboratories, who sold the company to its 500 employees in 2009.

Evans, who initially made the donation anonymously, said he knew just what to do with the money he earned from the company sale.

“I want to make a difference. I want to have this money really make an impact, and that's what this is going to do,” Evans said. “At least 150 doctors will graduate from (Marian), and go into the state of Indiana to practice medicine and deliver primary health care."

Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and Sen. Dan Coats, R-Indiana, also attended the ceremony.

The college of osteopathic medicine is scheduled to be completed in 2013, officials said.
