INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana students continued a trend of upward gains on ISTEP+ scores through the 2013-2014 school year, according to new numbers released Monday by the Indiana Department of Education.
For the 2013-2014 school year, IDOE reported 74.7 percent of students statewide passed both the English/language arts and mathematics ISTEP+ exams, up 1 percentage point from the 2012-2013 school year and more than 4 percentage points from the 2010-2011 school year.
Superintendent of Public Instruction Glenda Ritz issued a statement Monday praising the report.
“This year, we saw yet another increase in student performance indicated through ISTEP," Ritz said. "I want to congratulate Indiana’s students, parents, teachers and administrators for all their hard work this past year. These increased scores are just one sign of the great learning that is happening in Indiana schools.”
The statewide increase parallels that of Indiana's public school students, who have continued modest gains in passing rates since the 2010-2011 school year, when 70.2 percent passed both exams. That number was 74 percent in 2013-2014.
In particular, public school pass rates for the English/language arts exam rose 1.2 percentage points between the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years.
Private school students, while still boasting pass rates nearly 9 percentage points higher than the statewide average, showed only a .2-percent increase in passing ELA scores and no increase in passing math scores.
Private school pass rates on the whole remained down 3.5 percentage points from the 2010-2011 rate of 86.8 percent.
