An elderly woman died in a crash on Indianapolis' northwest side Sunday afternoon.

Indianapolis police said the crash happened just after 12:30 p.m. in the 7000 block of West 56th Street.

Witnesses told police that the driver of a 1999 Oldsmobile, later identified as Gladys Brown, 93, was westbound on 56th Street when she veered into the eastbound lane, striking an SUV.

A witness who was directly behind Brown's car told police that she slumped over the wheel before crossing the center line, according to a police report.

Brown was pronounced dead while on the way to a hospital.

The driver of the SUV, a 30-year-old woman, and her 1-year-old passenger, were not seriously injured.

Police aren't sure what caused Brown to cross into oncoming traffic.
