Firefighter Faces Second Allegation Of Child Molestation

Department Places 40-Year-Old On Leave

A Lawrence firefighter who pleaded guilty to child molestation more than a decade ago has been placed on administrative leave after being accused of molestation again.

A young adult alleges that Michael Darrell Kopp molested her when she was 16 years old, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported.

Previously, Kopp pleaded guilty to molesting a teenage relative. In that case, police said Kopp reached under the nightshirt of the sleeping teen and fondled her in July 1993 -- about two years before he joined the Lawrence Fire Department.

In the 1993 case, Kopp pleaded guilty to a felony molestation charge. A judge ordered him into a sex offender treatment program, Rinehart reported.

Less than a year later, Kopp successfully petitioned a court to reduce his conviction from a felony to a misdemeanor. A year after that Kopp applied to the fire department.

Police now say Kopp lied about his criminal history when he applied to the fire department. A city attorney is examining the application, Lawrence Assistant Police Chief Robert Bowser said.

Police are investigating the newest allegation. Kopp has hired an attorney, Rinehart reported.
