Food Left On Stove Blamed In Apartment Blaze

No One Injured In Fire

Crews battled another fire at an Indianapolis apartment building early Tuesday afternoon, the latest of several apartment blazes in recent weeks.

The fire broke out in the 1700 block of Pemberton Lane at the North Willow Apartments, near 86th Street and Ditch Road and across from St. Vincent Hospital, just after 12:30 p.m.

Indianapolis Fire Department Capt. Rita Reith said the fire was contained to a two-story unit, and that the blaze was brought under control in about 30 minutes.

The woman who lived there told fire crews that her friend was trying to boil water, but likely turned on the wrong burner, accidentally heating a pan of grease instead.

One firefighter was transported to Methodist Hospital to be checked out for overheating. No other injuries were reported.

Damage caused by the fire is estimated at $100,000.

Authorities said they have no reason to believe recent apartment fires in Indianapolis are related.
