Gian Ericson De Los Reyes arrested, accused of stealing iPods, putting erasers in boxes

Local man told 10News he found erasers in iPod box

SAN DIEGO - A man accused of going to Target stores, stealing iPods from boxes and replacing the items with erasers has been arrested, sheriff's officials announced Thursday.

Gian Ericson De Los Reyes, 26, was taken into custody Wednesday as he crossed into the U.S. from Mexico, according to San Diego County Sheriff's Department officials.

Sheriff's officials said De Los Reyes allegedly committed the thefts in stores in Santee, Poway, Lemon Grove, Chula Vista, Escondido and San Diego.

De Los Reyes would go into Target stores, take the iPods from the box and put erasers back in to "simulate a similar weight in the box," according to sheriff's officials.

De Los Reyes was booked on two charges of commercial burglary. His bail was set at $50,000

In late December, Jim Nevarde told RTV6 sister station 10News he purchased an iPod for his wife at a Target store in Mira Mesa. However, when she opened her Christmas gift, the box contained only school erasers and index cards.

"About five of them fit exactly in the space where the iPod goes," Nevarde told 10News.

Nevarde said he purchased another iPod at a store in the Midway area and had an employee open the box.

"Sure enough, it's full of erasers," Nevarde said. "Different color erasers but it's full of erasers again."

Following 10News' story in December, Target emailed the following a statement:

"At Target, we are committed to providing our guests with an outstanding shopping experience. We take this incident very seriously and worked directly with the guest to resolve the issue and make it right. We are looking into this incident and have no additional information to share."
