CARMEL, Ind. - Fifth-graders at Towne Meadow Elementary School in Carmel banded together to help a family coping with a loss.
Earlier this year, the father of a first-grader at the school was killed in an accident. The family not only lost their loved one, but also their main source of income.
The fifth-graders at the school decided to help. They held a fundraiser selling Fla-Vor-Ice treats and popsicles during lunch periods.
They wanted to help the family pay for after-school child care for next year. Their goal was to raise $2,800.
"The love and support this school has shown has been just marvelous. There are no words to explain how loving and supporting that this group of teachers, administrators, students and families in this small little southwest corner of Hamilton County is," widow Luanna Stephens said.
The kids presented a check to the family during their graduation ceremony Wednesday morning.
The students went well above and beyond their goal and raised more than $3,500.
