LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Families in Haiti will receive school supplies, hygiene products and a toy through holiday packages put together by volunteers at a Lafayette church.
WLFI-TV reports more than 70 volunteers at Cornerstone Baptist Church put together 2,000 holiday bags on Sunday to send to Haiti as part of the Christmas Bags for Haiti program.
Team coordinator Stanley Curtis says each bag costs about $11 in the U.S., but the contents would cost about $50 in Haiti. He says many Haitians never receive a bar of soap, and toothpaste there can cost $10.
The bags are expected to reach Haiti in early November. They are part of more than 10,000 sent to the country each year through the program.
