VIGO COUNTY, Ind. - It was the lunch of a lifetime for one Vigo County student when her soldier father surprised her at school on Tuesday afternoon.
Her dad is in the National Guard and had been in Kuwait for nine months.
The family was expecting him home later in October, but dad said he just couldn’t wait any longer.
For Sgt. David Moore, this was the longest he had ever been away from his wife and two daughters.
The family said the surprise was more than just reuniting a family; it gave them a day to help make up for the months of sacrifice.
"This has been a wonderful moment in my life. I never knew what a hardship this was on families until I did it myself. It's a lot of understanding now. There's more to it than what you really see. It's a lot harder when you actually do it," Moore said.
Moore has a few weeks left of vacation, and then he will go back to his civilian job, until when, and if, his unit is called up again.
He said for now, it is all about some much-deserved family time.
