INDIANAPOLIS - Lucky the dog was rescued from Afghanistan and now lives in Indianapolis with her new family.
Amy Birk, Practice Manager of The Downtown Veterinarian, told RTV6 they were treating Lucky, a 14-month-old shepherd mix.
Lucky’s owner, Justin Yager, was stationed in Afghanistan when Lucky wandered into his base, limping, in the winter.
Yager said she was gentle-natured, but was walking on three legs and malnourished.
"Had icicles hanging off of her, so we brought her in and gave her some food and she'd leave in the evenings when we left and come back in the mornings and spend the day at work with us," Yager said.
When Yager arrived back home to the U.S., he contacted a rescue site in Afghanistan that helped save Lucky and bring her home.
The Downtown Veterinarian treated Lucky for a checkup and said she is doing much better now and should make a full recovery.
Yager said Lucky is adapting to life in downtown Indianapolis and even knows where Starbucks is.
