INDIANAPOLIS - A Hoosier doctor was one of 90 people nationally recognized for his outstanding community service.
Dr. Steve Isenberg was honored at the National Jefferson Awards ceremony in Washington, D.C.
Isenberg was selected to attend the ceremony for his Medals4Mettle program.
Marathoners donate their race medals to the organization, and then volunteers clean and polish them and put on new ribbons.
The medals end up around the necks of deserving patients.
He said he got the idea for the program when we visited a friend in the hospital after he ran the Chicago Marathon.
“I didn’t know what else to say to him and I pulled my medal out of my pocket and I gave it to him, and he lit up,” Isenberg said.
Over the past seven years, his organization has given out 25,000 medals, mostly to pediatric patients.
Isenberg was selected from all of the 2013 Indiana Jefferson Award winners to attend the national ceremony.
