KANSAS CITY - Love was in the air Monday at the Kansas City, Kansas, airport, as a young man from South Africa proposed to his girlfriend with help from an entire jet full of passengers.
George Erasmus popped the question to his girlfriend of three years, Ashley Kracht, with a big surprise. Kracht thought she was just picking her boyfriend up at the airport, but she had no idea what Erasmus had in store for her.
As passengers exited United Flight 3774 from Dulles, each handed a carnation or daisy to Kracht. She giggled nervously, smiling and thanking each person. Tears rolled down her cheeks.
Once Ashley had an arm full of flowers, Erasmus was the last passenger off the plane. He clutched a bouquet of roses.
The two embraced, he got down on one knee and pulled a ring box out of his pocket.
"Ashley, will you marry me?"
"I can't believe this is happening. I knew I should have painted my nails," she responded.
Eramus grabbed her finger and gently slid on the diamond ring as she said, "Of course." Over the PA system, United Airlines played a song Eramus wrote for his love.
Eramus and Kracht met in Cape Town, South Africa, while she served as a missionary. He said seeing how much Ashley cared for the young children in South Africa touched his heart and they fell madly in love, both of them said.
Eramus flew to Kansas City so the two of them could spend three weeks in Overland Park with Kracht's family.
