TRAFALGAR, Ind. - It was an emotional homecoming for 130 Indiana Army National Guard soldiers who had been deployed for nearly a year in Afghanistan.
Mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, husbands and wives of the Indiana National Guard 1438th Transportation Company gathered in the Indian Creek High School gym Wednesday.
Every handmade sign told the story of a loved one who served his or her country and the family that was left behind.
For some of the families, children were born while husbands were gone, mothers and fathers worried for the safety of their sons and daughters and children missed their parents.
No one complained when the soldiers marched into gym nearly an hour behind schedule. Families were simply grateful to be reunited after the uncertainties of war.
Staff Sgt. Randal Lane was honored during the ceremony. He died of a heart attack during his deployment.
