The attacker fled after the woman cried for help when he snatched her purse.
Navy vet Kendrick Taylor said he was headed to the gym when he saw the woman being attacked.
"What if that was my grandmother?" he said. "When I looked down I didn't know if he had a knife or a gun. When I saw the lady was so old when he threw her down, she was so fragile and I knew she needed help."
Once Taylor caught up with and tackled DesJardin (who was on probation) he said he held him there and told the others to call the police.
DesJardin was charged with attempted robbery and battery on a person 65 or older.
The woman who was attacked suffered minor injuries.
