The Bureau of Motor Vehicles will require people seeking driver's licenses or state ID cards to show birth certificates, Social Security cards or other documentation that proves who they are beginning Jan. 1.

The league said the new requirements add to the burden already imposed by the voter ID law, especially on groups such as the poor and elderly.

New arguments over the additional BMV requirements have been added to a lawsuit challenging the voter ID law that is pending before the Indiana Court of Appeals.

The U.S. Supreme Court has upheld the law, but the current lawsuit contends it violates the Indiana constitution.

Earlier this month, the BMV announced the new measures it plans to take in an effort to combat identity fraud.
