Historic Foundry Reborn With New Purpose

PurePower Technologies Resurrects Old Facility

A long-time foundry on Brookville Road operated since the 1930s has been reborn with a new purpose.

PurePower Technologies, a division of Navistar, employs 120 workers at a facility set for closure in 2009.

Unions and local leaders, such as Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard and U.S. Rep. Andre Carson, partnered with unions to keep the facility open, and the company said business is booming.

"The market looks very positive moving forward," said Eric Tharp, of PurePower Technologies. "We are seeing really positive growth late this fall and early winter, so it's a really exciting time for us."

"Barely two years ago, people were unemployed, people were out of jobs," Carson said. "Look at the smiles on the people over here. All the people are excited again."

Navistar has about 750 workers in Indiana and said it is planning to bring some jobs back to the U.S. from overseas.
