Surprisingly, the winner of the Iowa State Fair's Big Boar contest wasn’t from Iowa.

For the first time, this year’s winner had Hoosier ties.

Reggie, a hog raised near Austin, Ind., earned the honor Thursday on the opening day of the state fair in Des Moines.

Reggie weighed in at 1,335 pounds, topping the heftiest Iowa hog that weighed 1,128 pounds, The Des Moines Register reported.

Swine Barn manager Ernie Barnes said he didn’t mind that a hog from outside Iowa won the 37-year-old competition.

Reggie's owner, Rick Stockdale, noted Iowa's status as the nation's top hog producer, saying, "It's a thrill and an honor to win in the capital of hogs."
