Ofc. Dustin Carmack Rushed To Wishard Memorial Hospital

An Indianapolis police officer was shot on the city's west side Friday evening.Dispatchers said about 8:30 p.m., police were called out to the intersection of West Michigan Street and North Tibbs Avenue on reports of a fight at a liquor store.When officers arrived to break up the fight, one of the people involved fled the scene on foot. That person was later caught and taken into custody.Investigators said minutes later, Officer Dustin Carmack was shot in the hip while sitting in his cruiser.Carmack was rushed to Wishard Memorial Hospital in good condition, police said. He was still at Wishard on Saturday morning.Indianapolis police Sgt. Catherine Cummings said officers were searching for a person of interest in connection to the shooting, but they later said a vehicle description they provided was not believed to be connected.A 17-year-old juvenile that was arrested in connection to the fight was not believed to be connected to the subsequent shooting.Carmack has been with IMPD since February 2010, and his mother is also an officer with IMPD, Cummings said.Police asked anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS.
