After complaints about the city's cab drivers, starting Thursday, all taxis will have a passenger bill of rights posted inside.
In a recent survey, visitors to downtown ranked cab drivers as their No. 1 complaint, citing issues with drivers' failure to speak English and lack of directional knowledge, refusal of credit cards, overcharging, unsafe driving and poor vehicle condition. The bill a rights, included in a welcome letter from Mayor Greg Ballard, will be posted in the city's more than 700 cabs in an effort to inform riders of their rights, 6News' Jack Rinehart reported. Those who aren't satisfied with the service they receive are urged to call 317-327-TAXI or e-mail taxi@indy.gov with the cab number, their complaint and contact information."Once we receive a complaint, I can assure you that we will act swiftly to make sure the appropriate action is taken on our end," said Adam Collins, city licensing administrator. The Department of Code Enforcement will oversee the new standards. The agency is considering administering an English exam for all cab drivers at the time they apply for a license.
