A $2 million gift to the Indianapolis Zoo will help build an ambitious new orangutan exhibit.

The large contribution came from the Dean and Barbara White Family Foundation, created by Crown Point entrepreneur Dean White of Whiteco Industries Inc.

The zoo's "Campaign for Conservation and Community: Saving the Orangutans" has secured nearly $25 million of its $30 million campaign goal less than a month before the groundbreaking for the International Orangutan Center.

The state-of-the-art facility will be home to some of the world's most endangered primates.

"This project will further solidify the Indianapolis Zoo's role in advancing global animal conservation and help bring notoriety to this magnificent species that, unfortunately, is on the brink of extinction," White said in a news release.

It's expected to open Memorial Day Weekend 2014.
