INDIANAPOLIS - Indiana has had its first West Nile virus fatality of 2013, the state health department reported.
The person who died was a Vigo County resident, officials said. No other details were released about the victim.
Officials said 20 human cases of West Nile have been reported in the state this year, and infected mosquitos have been found in 87 of 92 Indiana counties.
In 2012, Indiana had eight West Nile virus deaths and 77 human cases.
Health officials said mosquitos will still be active and pose a risk of transmitting West Nile virus until Indiana has a hard freeze.
