INDIANAPOLIS - Police have identified the man killed when his car plunged off Interstate 70 on Indianapolis' east side early Thursday, police said.

The crash happened just before 6:30 a.m. at I-70 and Shadeland Avenue.

Police said Charles Wayne Barker, 58, of Indianapolis, was speeding on eastbound I-70 when his car went off the right side of the road, jumped the concrete barrier, struck a utility pole and crash onto the roadway about 20 feet below.

The car ended up on its top under the overpass in the southbound lanes of Shadeland. Barker was pronounced dead at the scene.

The crash also brought down power lines in the area.

"When they severed the light pole, they damaged the wires attached to the light pole, and we blocked I-70 eastbound and westbound and all entrance ramps so (Indianapolis Power and Light) could get the wires lifted," said Trooper Ginger Marshall.

The interstate was closed for two hours after the crash.
