NOBLESVILLE, Ind. - One man was killed after a gas grill exploded at a church in Noblesville on Monday evening.
The incident happened at Grace Community Church in the 5500 block of East 146th Street, officers said.
Officials said a propane grill exploded during preparations for a cookout around 5:15 p.m.
Lt. Bruce Barnes with the Noblesville Police Department said three to five other people were standing around at the time of the explosion. One person suffered fatal injuries, but no other injuries were reported.
The victim was later identified as Doug Gripp, 52, a husband and father of two from Carmel.
The Men of Grace 2013 Kickoff BBQ was scheduled to start at 6:30 p.m., but the church announced via Twitter at 5:20 p.m. that the event had been canceled.
Senior Pastor Dave Rodriguez said the church was expecting about 400 people to come for the celebration and there were already a number of volunteers at the church doing preparations.
Rodriguez said church leaders were working to comfort and support Gripp's family.
"We have been in conversation with them. One of our pastors has been there. We're in shock, she's in shock and we are trusting God for her life, for their life, for the family," he said.
Rodriguez said the church will be open all day Tuesday for anyone who may need help or guidance.
“We are in the process of caring for the volunteer's family, loved ones and the Men of Grace community. This is a heartbreaking time for all of us. Let’s unite together and pray for God’s presence and comfort for all those involved,” Rodriguez said in a statement on Facebook.
The cause of the explosion is still under investigation.
"We're still looking into the reason why. Probably not going to have the answers today, tomorrow or weeks to come," Barnes said.
