TAYLORSVILLE, Ind. - One man is dead and another man was taken into custody after a police standoff in Taylorsville early Monday.
Indiana State Police said the incident began Sunday about 8 p.m. when officers got a tip about a man from Michigan wanted on an armed robbery charge. The suspect was said to be accompanied by another man from Michigan and the pair was possibly in Taylorsville, investigators said.
Police searched the area for the suspect's vehicle. Just before midnight, detectives finally tracked down the pair at the Red Roof Inn in Taylorsville. Detectives later confirmed the pair to step-father and step-son.
SWAT officers were called to the scene to assist Bartholomew County Sheriff's Deputies as well as the Columbus Police Department.
Nearly five hours later, police made contact with pair. Police said Zachary Baker, 26, of Waterford, Mich., surrendered to police without incident. Baker was wanted on armed robbery charges, police said.
The other man was identified as Richard Morris, 44, also of Waterford, Mich. Morris was not wanted on any active warrants, but police confirmed he was a convicted, serious violent felon in possession of a firearm. Bartholomew County police then got a warrant to arrest Morris and negotiations continued overnight until police heard a single gunshot inside the motel room. SWAT officers entered the motel room and found Morris dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
The incident remains under investigation, ISP said.
