MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ind. - One person is dead and one man is in police custody after a shooting in Montgomery County late Monday, Indiana State Police said.

Investigators said the shooting happened just before 9:30 p.m. at a home near 2600 North 950 East in Darlington.

Montgomery County Sheriff’s officials were dispatched to the home after receiving a 911 call about an assault.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found the unresponsive victim on the ground suffering from apparent gunshot wounds.  The victim was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.

A witness told investigators a two-toned 1992 Chevrolet pickup truck had fled the scene, possibly headed to Brownsburg.

The sheriff’s department then turned the investigation over to the Indiana State Police.

About 4:30 a.m., after processing evidence from the crime scene, an arrest warrant was issued for Matthew Hickman, 39, of Brownsburg.

Hickman was taken into custody without incident and transported to the Montgomery County Jail on a warrant for murder and aggravated battery, ISP said.

The name of the victim was not immediately released.
