1 person fatally shot, 2 stabbed at Black Diamond nightclub on Lafayette Road

Club lacked city licenses

INDIANAPOLIS - One person was fatally shot and two people were stabbed at a nightclub near Lafayette Square Mall early Friday.

Police said the shooting and stabbing resulted from a fight at the Club Black Diamond event hosted at a club called Chispas in the 3800 block of Lafayette Road.

Just before 3 a.m., police said 33-year-old Andrew Sobers got into a fight with employees at the club after they refused to let him inside. Sobers then went to the parking lot and apparently started a fight with two other people.

The fight escalated into two people being stabbed with non-life-threatening injuries, Indianapolis Metro Police Department detectives said.

Moments later, the two people who were stabbed called a friend, Dennis Turentine, of Indianapolis, for help. Turentine arrived on scene and allegedly fatally shot Sobers, detectives said.

Turentine was taken into custody by police.

The identities of the stabbing victims have yet to be released.

The Call 6 Investigators discovered that the promoter of the event at Club Black Diamond -- Cliffton McCray, aka DJ World -- had no liquor license or dance hall permit, according to city records.

Chispas, the club hosting the event, does have a liquor license, but its dancehall permit was denied in February, the Call 6 Investigators said.

Similar nightclubs have been illegally popping up in Marion County and have become part of a troubling trend.

Police urged anyone with information about the shooting or stabbing to call Crime Stoppers at 317-262-TIPS or text "INDYCYS" TO 274627 (CRIMES).
